what is it?

Naturopathy

so what is

Naturopathy?

Naturopathy is a holistic approach to health and wellness, designed to support the healing of the body, mind and spirit. It combines modern science with age old wisdom to treat the whole person and the root cause of the issue, not just the symptoms that develop. My areas of specialty are:

Mental health

Anxiety, depression, irritability, poor stress tolerance, fatigue, poor memory and poor concentration. This includes work with genetics: MTHFR gene mutations and Pyroluria.

Gut health and digestion

Gut bacteria imbalances, SIBO, constipation/diarrhoea, reflux, nausea, bloating, irritable bowel disease (IBS) and detoxification issues.

Hormones

Menstrual issues, acne, fertility, PMS, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), painful periods and endometriosis.

Testing options

Testing Options

Gut Health

Comprehensive stool testing to look for beneficial & pathogenic bacteria, bacterial imbalances, parasites, candida, and digestive markers.

Genetics & Histamine

Genetic testing helps us identify if gene mutations including MTHFR are a concern for you. We can also use the Pfeiffer Profile to gain valuable information related to gene mutations including histamine levels.

Minerals & Heavy Metals

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) helps us to identify if there are any deficiencies or toxicity with minerals and heavy metals.

Food Intolerance & Biocompatibility

Using ALCAT blood testing or Hair 500 biocompatibility testing, we can find out what foods are good for you and which foods are causing issues for you. To purchase the Food Biocomatibility Test without a consult, click here.

Hormones

Saliva or urine (DUTCH) hormone testing to look at sex hormones & stress hormones. This is great for fertility or menstrual issues, as well as fatigue and mental health.

Thyroid

Blood testing & urine Iodine loading test to find out how your thyroid is functioning.

Herbal medicine

Ah my true love, herbal medicines.
What can’t they treat?
Got insomnia? -I’ve got a herb for you.
Cold hands and feet? -I’ve got a herb for you.
Feeling bloated after your meals? -You betcha, there’s a herb for that too!

Herbal medicine can be used in many forms, such as liquid tinctures, powders, capsules, tablets and teas. Herbs have been used in medicine for thousands of years and have a lot of anecdotal and scientific research behind them. Some common pharmaceutical medications like aspirin have actually been derived from herbal medicine!

Herbal remedies are great for both symptomatic and preventative treatments, a few of my favourites are common weeds you might even find in your own backyard!

I love using herbal medicine due to its versatile nature, we can create tinctures customised to you using multiple herbs with synergistic qualities.

Nutrition

I love using food as medicine, and this is where we can really make a lasting impression in your life. The real lesson here is to focus on wholefoods and things that come from the earth. Some conditions and circumstances will require specific dietary tailoring, but many of us can absolutely thrive just by eating a range of fresh, whole foods.
In my clinic I don’t subscribe to any one way of eating, instead I look at what food is making your body happy and what food is making your soul happy -then getting them to align as close as possible.

When deficiencies are strong, or if there’s a particularly high need for a nutrient, often supplements can deliver therapeutic doses that can be hard for food to match -hence my love of supplements too. Naturopaths have access to the highest quality, practitioner only supplements -this is a situation where quality definitely is more important than quantity.

Lifestyle

Don’t worry I wont just tell everyone to meditate and practice yoga (although I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt), lifestyle encompasses so much more than that.
It means perhaps creating a morning or evening routine to reduce stress, allowing yourself enough downtime to rest and relax, creating a nurturing sleeping environment, slowing down to eat, ensuring you get enough sunlight during the day, listening to some good beats or podcasts and finding some ways to play and get a good belly laugh in, live comedy anyone?

3 Lifestyle Hacks:

1. Turn off electronics 2 hours before bedtime. The blue light emitted from screens suppresses melatonin production and makes it hard to fall asleep. Best thing to do is put an orange filter over your phone and computer and use lamps with an orange glow at night. For more sleep hacks click here.

2. Don’t drink water with meals. It is very important to stay hydrated, but drinking lots of water with your meal dilutes the stomach acid and makes it harder for your body to digest food properly. This can lead to a number of issues including reflux, bloating, fermentation, and flatulence -yikes! Click here to read a guest post I wrote about this.

3. Detox your environment. Make the switch to natural cleaning and beauty products to minimise your exposure to chemicals and toxins. Start with deodorant, click here to find out why.

but thats not all,,,

Flower essences

I LOVE working with flower essences, they are truly a slice of magic. They are vibrational remedies that help you work through your feelings, emotions, spiritual blocks and self-limiting beliefs -I’ve found them to be very effective in personal and clinical use. There are 69 Australian Bush Flower Essences with different healing attributes and together we can make you a personalised blend tailored to your specific needs.

Nail diagnosis

Fingernails can be a potent indicator of a person’s nutritional status and are a virtual snapshot of their health over the last six months. We look for subtle changes in the colour, shape and texture of the nails, which can indicate internal imbalances, dysfunction and nutrient deficiencies.

Iridology

Iridology is the study of the eyes to gain insight into a person’s overall health. We look at the colour and structure of the iris, sclera and pupil to help gain an understanding of past, present and future health conditions. Different parts of the eyes relate to different organs, parts of the body and personality characteristics, and we are able to gain insights into their weaknesses and strengths. Tongue diagnosis

The state of the tongue also reflects the health of the body. The colour, shape, mobility and coating of the tongue can give us some clues into any nutrient deficiencies or infections that may be occuring.
